CPC regulations can be confusing. Let us try and clear things up for you.
The LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a certification that is required for all professional LGV drivers in the United Kingdom and European Union. The certification is designed to ensure that LGV drivers have the necessary knowledge and skills to operate these vehicles safely and effectively.
It is only required if you will drive a commercial vehicle professionally. If you are driving privately, for example a horse lorry, motorhome etc, then it is not required.
If you’re not sure if you need a CPC then you can check the list of exemptions on the government website
To obtain the LGV Driver CPC, drivers must complete a series of modules that cover topics such as vehicle safety, driver hours and rest periods, and road traffic laws. The modules are divided into two categories: the initial qualification and periodic training.
The initial qualification involves passing a series of tests, including a theory test (module 2) and a practical test (module 4). Once the initial qualification is complete, drivers can begin working as professional LGV drivers.
Drivers can arrange their own module 2 test, or their training company may arrange it for them. Some training companies will also provide learning material for the CPC module 2 test.
Drivers would usually need to go to a training school for the module 4 practical test as this requires the use of a vehicle.
When they are qualified, drivers must complete 35 hours of periodic training every five years to maintain their qualifications. This training can be delivered in a variety of formats, including classroom-based courses, e-learning courses, and practical training sessions.
In summary, the LGV Driver CPC is an important certification that ensures LGV drivers are trained and competent in operating these vehicles safely and efficiently.
