Lorry driving is generally considered to be a well paid job. Many people are drawn to the industry because of how much you can earn as a lorry driver.
There is a well documented shortage of lorry drivers, this is due to several factors including Brexit and the Coronavirus pandemic. This has lead to a jump in wages for drivers for both category C and category C+E.
Like any other profession the amount you will earn depends on the individual job role that you get. Much will depend on the hours and type of work that you’re doing. For example, if you’re happy to do nights out or European work you can really earn some serious money. Whereas jobs when you’re home for dinner every night will not be as well paid.
At the time of writing the average starting salary for a HGV driver on Indeed.com is £45,000
That’s £3,750 a month before tax.
Employers offer a variety of working hours, there is sure to be job out there that is perfect for you! Would working a rolling 4 on, 4 off pattern suit you? Would you prefer to work permanent days, or earn more money doing permanent nights? You can increase earnings even further by spending nights out, this can add up to £10,000 to your salary.
Or you could work for an agency and completely choose the days that you work. Driving different trucks, with different loads to different destinations and meeting different people every day.
As you can see, the job is incredibly flexible.
There is a perfect driving job for everyone. These figures are not a guarantee of earnings. They are just an indication of what you could earn as a HGV Driver. Exact figures will vary from one person to the next and are dependant on many factors.
